Vintage Subwoofer Pet House
Back in the late 80s/early 90s, this Shure subwoofer may have been pounding out sounds in someone’s newly furnished “home theater” but these days, it has been upcycled as a home for your very best friend AND a very cool table at the side of your bed or favorite chair.
Founded in 1925 in downtown Chicago, Shure has earned a worldwide reputation for its microphones and phonograph cartridges and in 1985 patented a home theater system. This subwoofer, HTS 50SW, was produced in the late 1980s.
During the process of repurposing, every effort has been made to make this piece as safe and comfortable as possible for your pet. All the mechanics of the subwoofer have been removed and after a detailed cleaning, I lightly sanded the exterior, treated the wood with Watco Oil and followed up with a high quality furniture wax to smooth out any roughness. This brought out the beauty of the wood grain. The piece is in very good vintage condition with only a couple of very minor wear marks and one medium scratch on the top that has been darkened with the oil and now (although still noticeable) blends with the finish. The subwoofer is a medium walnut with two lighter colorations striping each side.
Small salad bowls have been upcycled for feet and the front of the large opening has been covered with a commercial grade vinyl and detailed with the subwoofer’s original screws.
The interior of the house has been sanded and painted with Valspar’s satin finish, low order/Zero VOC black latex paint. According to the label, “it is scrubbable, stain resistant and mildew resistant.” I have fitted the floor with a removable extremely soft, low shag carpet.
When your pet needs a hideout in your media room, studio or corner of the family room, consider a recycled Klipsch subwoofer that has been detailed with upholstered walls, a plush carpet, speaker drivers for awesome feet, and your pet’s name in wood letters on the headboard. Klipsch has been a respected name in high-end audio for years and this subwoofer was originally part of the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system introduced in 2003. If you are looking for a totally unique home for your best friend, this is definitely the conversation piece that will fit the bill.

Small drivers that I reclaimed from damaged speakers have been upcycled for feet. The back opening has been detailed with the subwoofer’s original screws and is now the main entrance. The two sides’ speaker grills can be used for ultimate privacy or easily removed for more air circulation.
