The top 10 smartest dog breeds is from the book, The Intelligence of Dogs by Stanley Coren, PhD. More than 200 professional dog obedience judges evaluated 110 breeds, assessing their performance on various tests. The top dog breeds followed the commands in less than five repetitions and obeyed them 95% of the time or better.

10. Australian Cattle Dog
Australian Cattle Dog is a working dog that originated from a stockman named Timmins who crossed a Smithfield with a Dingo, then made further crosses with Collies and Dalmatians. They are an agile, active and intelligent breed who like herding and a lot of exercise. They are highly organised and even been known put their own toys away after playing.
The Rottweiler began in Germany as a working dog. They have a somewhat bad reputation as a vicious breed that attacks with no warning, but in reality, with early training, they are robust, powerful and are known for unfailing loyalty. Rottweilers are great police dogs, herders and one of the best guard dogs.
Not only is the Papillon is super cute but it’s also one of the smartest and affectionate. They are often described as big dogs in little dog’s bodies. They are one of the most courageous and protective of their masters so they would make a good guard dog. Another bonus point is that Papillons can be litter trained.
7. Labrador Retriever
Labradors are gentle, patient and intelligent – perfect family pets. They are definitely one of the most popular breeds in the world. They are one of the best search and rescue dogs and also known to be able to self train by observing human behaviour.
Shetland Sheepdogs were bred for herding sheep and cattle on the Shetland Isles which requires intelligence and concentration. We guess they were breed with long fur for protection from harsh winds and the cold climate on the Island. They are very loyal and affectionate towards their families.
Dobermans may have mean and vicious reputations but that is because they are fiercely protective of their masters and can be very territorial. They are an intelligent breed that have great stamina and enjoy working. Dobermans are one of the best guard dogs. If trained properly from an early age, they can be great family dogs too.

Golden Retrievers are definitely a favourite breed for family pets as they embody everything that we love about dogs: loyal, patient, gentle, affectionate, eager to please and good with children. They can learn over 200 commands and are often seen as the perfect family pet.
3. German Shepherd
German Shepherds are intelligent, courageous, loyal and protective. They are so intelligent that they nearly always obey the first instances of commands and they can be trained to do any task after only brief practice. They need direction and purpose in order to be happy. They are one of the most dependable dogs so they are often used as police dogs, in search-and-rescue teams and they are one of the best guard dogs.
Poodles were bred to retrieve things from water. They are easy to train and can learn quickly. That’s why they are popular as circus performers. They are very active so need plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.
1. Border Collie
Border Collies are our champions; they are the most intelligent and full of energy. They need a lot of exercise and need to have a purpose, otherwise they can be terribly destructive. They have been breed to be work dogs so they need jobs and things to do to keep them happy. Also they do very well at competitions requiring agility and obedience, making them perfect sheepdogs. Collies have intense connections with their owners so they are perfect companions but you need to make sure that you have high energy so you can keep up with them!
